Cigar Review – Macanudo Inspirado Green

In this cigar review I smoke and review the Macanudo Inspirado Green. This cigar piqued my interest when I saw a email with these beauties on sale. I’ve had the Macanudo Red and Café in the past but never the Green so I thought I’d give it a shot. I went down to my local tobacconist Luke at REM’s Place in Grand Junction, Colorado and picked up a handful of the Macanduo Inspirado Green Robustos.

What do I say about the cigar?

Initial Light: Before I lit the cigar, I took a couple dry puffs, or cold puffs. I got lots of sweet dark fruit like a fig newton. After toasting the foot and purging the cigar I was hit with lots of strong pepper flavors. Underneath the pepper was unsweetened cocoa and coffee.

First Third: Once I moved past the initial light the pepper became not so overwhelming and I got a strong taste of cedar.   Throughout the first third I got a buttery flavor on the long finish and the cedar taste became sweeter.

Second Third: At about the transition point between the first and second third I had to do a minor touch up on the burn. It wasn’t canoeing but just burning slightly uneven. I hadn’t had to ash so far and the ash was a bright gray. As I continued through the second third of the cigar the pepper and cedar balanced out and I lost the sweetness and butter flavors.

Final Third: Once I moved into the final third a cherry flavor became evident on the long finish. I haven’t had anymore burn issues and no construction issues have arisen.

 Final Thoughts:   This is a good cigar. When I think of Macanudo I use to think about the old Café and how light it was. This cigar is not like that at all. It’s full body, cedar and cherry flavored gem. Would I buy a box of these? Probably. This cigar would be a good cigar to throw in the rotation. Would I take this cigar on the golf course, or smoke one while mowing the lawn? Probably not. I want to relax with this cigar, and I don’t want to lose it on the links, or over smoke it.

Cigar Review – EP Carrillo La Historia & Encore Side by Side

In this post I smoke the EP Carrillo La Historia and the EP Carrillo Encore. I decided to smoke and review them side by side because both are great cigars and REM’S Place in Grand Junction, CO, my local lounge happened to have both, and I thought it would be fun.

Cold/Dry Draw: V-Cut, with a good draw, not to tight but not to loose. With the taste of dark fruit, like a fig newton without the cake.Cold/Dry Draw: V-Cut, good draw, a bit tighter than the La Historia. But with similar dark fruit flavors on the dry/cold draw.
Initial Light: Spice and heat from the initial light smother the coffee and leather notes.Initial Light: Very little spice or heat on the initial light. Mostly toast flavors with slight sweetness on the finish.
First Third: After letting the cigar rest a moment and moving into the first third of the cigar I tasted a buttery nutty and slightly sweet chocolate covered cherry flavors. The spice and heat that initially hit me during the initial light has dropped significantly, but some pepper remains.First Third: Moving beyond the initial light I do get sweet wood, maybe oak, with very slight toasted sweetness on the finish.
Second Third: Moving into the second third I picked up the pace a bit and noticed more spicy pepper and less sweetness. But as I transitioned into the second third I got more of that buttery nut flavor.Second Third: Moving into the second third the wood notes become bolder with a slight bitterness on the wood notes followed by hints of sweetness
Final Third: Transitioning into the final third the buttery nut flavors came to the front with the sweet chocolate charry flavors falling into the background and the pepper almost disappearing.Final Third: As I transitioned to the final third the bitterness of the wood stayed the same and I lost most of the sweetness from before.
Final Thoughts: Great cigar, lots of flavor. The burn was near perfect, no canoeing, tunneling, running, or mouseholes. Would I this cigar again? Yes. Would I buy a box of these cigars? Yes. This cigar is probably not one I would take to the golf course, or putting around in the back yard. This cigar needs to be smoked slowly and enjoyed. This cigar is about $15 in Colorado. Final Thoughts: Great smoke, with sweet notes of wood and toast. The burn was near perfect, no tunneling, canoeing, running, or mouseholes. Would I buy this cigar again? Yes. Would I buy a box? Probably not, but I would pick them up when I crave something a bit different. I would not take this cigar golfing or smoke it while moving the lawn. Enjoy this cigar with a drink of your choice and enjoy it. Price is about $15 in Colorado.

What does My Father say about the cigar?

Richness and Abundance, just as its name, this is what the new ‘My Father La Opulencia’ is all about. Criollo and Corojo Binders, Corojo, Criollo and Habano Filler all coming from selected farms such as finca El Pedrero, Las Lometas and La Bonita, all property of the Garcia family, finished with a beautiful Mexico Rosado Oscuro wrapper, creating this medium to 3/4 body cigar with the perfect combination of aroma, flavors and complexity. Offered in 6 box-pressed sizes, that are packaged in 20 count boxes, following the traditional My Father line but this time using an art created back in 1897, redesigned to resemble the name of the brand ‘La Opulencia’.

What do I say about the cigar?

Initial Light: Lots of pepper and spice on the first few draws after lighting the cigar. The pepper is followed by sweetness and oak.

First Third:  Predominantly oak and leather, no cocoa, anise, or sweetness. The construction is great, the cigar isn’t canoeing, no runners, no mouse holes, the burn is even, and the cap is intact.

Second Third:   Burn is slightly uneven, but this happens with cigars sometimes. I rolled the cigar over and the burn corrected itself as it should. The cigar construction is holding up, and the burn is good, in spite of the slight unevenness of the burn.

Final Third: The burn corrected itself, and I’m tasting lots of leather, earth, oak, with just a hint of spice and cocoa, but no sweetness.

Final Thoughts:   Take your time with this cigar. Don’t rush through it. I wouldn’t take this cigar on the golf course or have it as a “back yard ‘gar”, it’s to fine of a cigar for running around. I would definitely spend my own money on a box of these cigars.

Construction of the cigar was great through and through. The burn was slightly wonky, but it corrected itself. This cigar also produces lots of billowing smoke and fine ash. The cigar didn’t tar up on me, and the cap stayed intact which is impressive for a box press with a v-cut.

What do I say about the cigar?

Initial Light / First Third:  On the dry draw I got lots of fruit, mixed with cedar and cocoa. Lighting the cigar with the cedar on it was interesting, I didn’t get much of light until I used the torch. On the initial light the flavor was dominated by cedar.

Once into the first third lots of spice and cedar. This cigar needs to be smoked slowly to allow for the full flavors of coffee, cocoa, and leather. Construction was great, burn was good, a bit uneven in the beginning but evened itself out nicely. The ash is nearly white and just a bit flakey.

Second Third: The spice has mellowed, moves into a great leather flavor with cocoa on the finish. Burn is still fantastic, the cap is still intact, no issues with canoeing, tunneling, or mouse holes.

Final Third:  Spice up front, with leather, old wood (in a good way). Burn and construction are great.

Final Thoughts:   I love this cigar, but this cigar demands to be smoked slowly to get the full flavor. Construction was fantastic, no issues with the burn, the cap, no tarring. I will be buying a box soon.

What do I say about the cigar?

Initial Light: (1:40)Leather, Earth, Fruit on and unsweet cocoa on the dry draw, and a bit of sweet cocoa and cedar on the initial light. The retro-hale smoke is cool because of the size of the cigar. This cigar starts off as a medium strength.

First Third: (14:30) Tasting lots of cocoa, gram cracker, cedar. The burn is great, no issues what so ever, and the ash is nice and thick, not flaking at all.

Second Third: (32:00) Lots of pepper, cedar,  and toast, with cocoa on the retro. Very medium-full in the second third.

Final Third: (44:03) Burn and ash have been consistent throughout the smoke. We didn’t have to touch up the cigars at all. No tunneling, mouseholes, canoeing, or taring. The cap stayed intact the entire smoke. The pepper has passed, and return with a creamy cocoa and coffee flavor.

Final Thoughts:  This is a great cigar. Not an everyday cigar, a cigar you want to celebrate something like the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing. Both Kenne and I highly recommend you try this cigar if you haven’t had one already.

What do I say about the cigar?

Initial Light / First Third:  A bit of heat on the first light, with lots of leather on the draw, and sweet chocolate like a brownie on the finish. No issues with the burn or construction. No mouse holes, canoes, tunneling, or runners. Flavors are a creamy cedar, leather, and coffee, with the same sweet chocolate on the finish.

Second Third:   Burn continues to be great, no issues with the burn. A few bits of loose tobacco from the head. Same leather, cedar, coffee, and brownie flavors.

Final Third: Same consistent burn throughout the smoke. Same great flavors.

Final Thoughts:  This is a full-bodied cigar. I would not recommend this for someone new to cigars or as a morning cigar. This is a good cigar, lots of flavor, constructed well, and not to expensive. This cigar is very consistent throughout the cigar and from cigar to cigar.

What do I say about the cigar?

Initial Light

The cigar feels good in your hand. The wrapper is velvety to the touch, oily, and a consistent color without blemishes. Lots of cocoa, earth, tobacco flavors on the cold draw. After the first light I was getting coffee followed by pepper or spice.

First Third:  

The burn was a bit one sided but the cigar corrected itself quickly. No other burn issues. Lots of cocoa, earth, wood, and spice, (maybe cinnamon or cedar).

Second Third:  

Spice and creaminess, lots of wood like cedar or cinnamon and hints of cocoa and coffee on the long finish.

Final Third: 

Cocoa is the predominant flavor, with coffee and spice. This cigar is very creamy at this point.

Final Thoughts:  

Don’t smoke this cigar to fast. This is a cigar you want to slowly enjoy with a cup of coffee, or your favorite spirts. The cigar band is beautiful, the cigar is a fantastic smoke. I would not recommend this to someone just starting with cigars as it is a medium full. The cigar is made well and worth enjoying.

Cigar Review – Cimarron Maduro by El Artista

What does El Artista say about the cigar?

The Cimarron was inspired by the craggy, snow-packed peaks of the Cimarron Region of America that cast icy shadows over fertile valleys with raging rapids that splash through sparkling granite shores dotted with tall pine trees. These are the Cimarron Regions of America and the inspiration for Cimarron Cigars. One is a spicy Maduro complimented with hints of earthy sweetness and spice.

What do I say about the cigar?

Initial Light / First Third:  Lots of wood right off the bat. Some spice from the cedar on the retrohale, and some cocoa on the finish.

Second Third:  Still lots of wood, some cedar spice, hints of cinnamon and cocoa.

Final Third: More cedar and cinnamon, with wood underneath the cedar on the finish.

Construction: I love the simple band of green, white and gold. The wrapper feels velvety and looks rugged. The burn was consistent and even throughout the smoke. The ash was a beautiful gray almost white. The ash wasn’t flakey like you might get with short fill cigars. There were no runners, tunneling, no mouse holes, or canoeing. The cap stayed intact without fraying the entire smoke.

Final Thoughts:  This cigar is great for working in the back yard or smoking while golfing. This cigar is at a great price point and tastes great. I would give someone new to cigars the Connecticut version of this cigar, not the maduro because of the spice from the cedar.

Cigar Review – CAO Flathead 660

In this cigar review I smoke and review the CAO Flathead 660 by CAO and General Cigars.

Filler: Nicaraguan Ligero and Piloto, Cubano Ligero

Construction:  The wrapper was flawless. The wrapper smooth, dark and oily. This cigar always feels good in my hand.

What does CAO say about the cigar?

Inspired by hot rods and pin-up girls, CAO Flathead is a box pressed collection that hits on all cylinders. Hand-shaped to deliver a striking flat top, the cigar features a brawny Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper and a blend that’s heavy on Nicaraguan leaf. Its front marks are named for engine parts, but the tribute to muscle cars doesn’t end there. Flathead gives a nod to the muscle car engine, with a lid that’s easily removed and used as wall art. There’s also a collectible, pin-up girl flysheet that’s enclosed in the box.

What do I say about the cigar?

Initial Light / First Third: I was tasting coffee, cocoa, leather and had some sweetness but not a lot. The construction of the cigar was excellent, the burn mostly even.

Second Third: Getting sweetness, earth, leather, and chocolate. Construction is still good. The burn is even, no tunneling, mouse holes, canoeing. The cap is starting to fray just a bit, but it isn’t bad.

Final Third: Deep coffee or espresso flavor, earthiness, leather, not a lot of sweetness at this point. Construction is good, again no tunneling, mouse holes, canoeing, no touchups needed, but the cap is fraying towards the end of the smoke. I used a punch and with the boxpress, this usually happens to me.

Final Thoughts: This cigar is one of my favorite cigars of all time. When I travel, I will take make sure I have a few of these in my travel humidor. I love the box, I love the box press, I love how it tastes. This is not a back yard or golfing cigar. You will want to sit and take your time with this one. But it is well worth it.

I highly suggest you buy a box from your local tobacconist.

Cigar Review – My Father The Judge

In this cigar review I smoke and review the My Father the Judge from the Garcia family.

  • Construction:  The cigar was flawless. The wrapper smooth and it felt good to hold in my hand.
  • Initial Light / First Third: Lots of cedar spice on the initial light with a mocha finish.
  • Second Third: Lots of leather and earth, some nuttiness
  • Final Third: The cedar spice was back, lots of leather and earth wit some nuttiness.

Final Thoughts: I absolutely love this cigar. The smoke so thick you can almost chew it. The earth and leather work well with the cedar spice. If you haven’t had this cigar pick one up from your local tobacconist and try it. If you have tried it I don’t need to tell you how good the cigar actually is.
