Cigar Review – Balmoral Anejo XO Oscuro

Balmoral Anejo XO Oscuro Cigar Review

About the cigar
This is the second of three Balmoral cigars I bought online to review. I know I always say to support your local tobacconist, but in my defense he tried to order them but wasn’t able to get any. So I bought a sample pack from Small Batch Cigars.

Direct from the Balmoral Cigars website, these cigars are:
Enrobed in a sun-grown, stalk-cut San Andrés wrapper, Balmoral Añejo XO Oscuro offers a luxuriously rich experience with complex notes of dark chocolate, espresso and black pepper that finish with a smooth, underlying natural sweetness.

Wrapper: Sun-Grown, Stalk-Cut Mexican San Andrés
Binder: Dominican Olor
Filler: Dominican Olor, Nicaragua (Jalapa) and Exclusive, Stalk-Cut Brazilian Mata Norte
Profile: Complex notes of dark chocolate, espresso and black pepper that finish with a smooth, underlying natural sweetness.

Initial Lite and First Third

I decided to go with a V cut for this cigar. If you’ve seen my other cigar reviews you  may have noticed this is my go to cut. It helps keep the cigar cap in tact as I smoke, while allowing for good air flow.

After lighting the cigar I was immediately hit a light floral note that mingled well with the natural sweetness of the earth and leather notes. I got a good amount of pepper on the retro-hale.

Second Third

The earth and leather notes were rich, sweet, and creamy with a taste of flowers and butter on the finish. I still had some pepper on the retro-hale but it was smoothed out by the buttery finish.

The burn had the slightest unevenness but no other problems with the construction of the cigar.

Final Third and Final Thoughts

The burn evened out quickly, and the cap stayed in tact throughout the smoke. There was no tunneling, mouse holes, or canoeing.

The flavors stayed similar throughout the cigar. The pepper mellowed in the middle third but came back towards the end. The sweet floral notes mixed extremely well with the earth and leather notes creating a sweet creamy coffee flavor with a buttery finish.

Over all I give this cigar a A. I would buy a box to smoke. These wouldn’t be an every day smoke, but not a special occasion smoke.
