Cigar Review: Camacho Triple Maduro

Like most cigar smokers I get lots of emails from various cigar retailers on the internet. One of them had a sale recently on the Camacho Triple Maduro, with the caption of “The Worlds Only Triple Maduro Cigar”. Well I don’t know if that’s true or not but I’ve had the CAO MX2 which is a double maduro and I loved it so I went to Rem’s Place, my local tobacconist here in Grand Junction, CO, and there they were. So, I decided to light it one up and see what’s what.

What does Camacho say about the cigar?

The Camacho Triple Maduro is one of the world’s greatest innovations in cigar making. The world’s only all Maduro cigar, no other Maduro in existence can deliver the unique flavor impact that ours can. That is why it took us over eighty-four tries to get the perfect recipe. The infamous black leaf through and through, dark, rich, full on flavor. The Camacho Triple Maduro is our big, bold smoke.

What do I say about the cigar?

Before the light: This is an intimidating cigar, a triple maduro. The wrapper is nearly as dark as the black and silver band. The wrapper was a soft dull dark chocolate, it felt almost prickly in the hand. The shape was different, almost a double perfecto but not quite, slightly larger in the middle and tapering to normal sizes on the ends. I used my “Perfect Cutter” and the draw as nice, the cigar wasn’t packed to tightly, or too loose, and the dry draw it tastes like dried dark fruit, it reminded me of a fig newton.

Initial Light: Smooth on the initial light. Got the expected heat from the torch, with a spicy wood, like cedar instead of a pepper.

First Third: Once I moved passed the initial light, the heat pretty much disappeared and the flavors expanded. I still got the spicy wood cedary type taste, with leather and a very light floral undertone. The burn was good, I had no issues to touch up, and the ash was solid, and light gray.

Second Third: The second third of the cigar started off with less spicy wood and more leather and dark chocolate. As I continued the second third, the wood came back without the spice. Still no burn issues.

Final Third: The final third narrows like the first third and the heat and spicy wood comes back. But if you slow down and don’t overheat the cigar you get less would and an abundance of floral notes. Still no burn issues

Final Thoughts:   The cigar burned very well, no mouse holes, canoeing, tunneling, or unevenness in the burn. I mostly got spicy wood like a cedar, leather, and floral undertones. Periodically I got dark chocolate. It’s important to smoke this cigar slowly. If you smoke to to quickly you heat up the cigar and you will only get the wood taste. Smoke a bit slower and you will get more flavor.

Whisky Tastings: Screwball Peanut Butter Whisky

Screwball Peanut Butter Whisky

Screwball Peanut Butter whisky was created by Steven and Brittany Yeng at his bar. Looking for a signature drink Steven combined peanut butter and whisky, and Brittany turned into a brand.

When he first combined his favorite classics—peanut butter and whiskey to create the most delicious shot, many snubbed their nose at this idea. But, it didn’t take long before it became their signature shot. He teamed up with his wife to create Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey—and to their surprise, ended up creating something even better than the original shot. Of course, the team wouldn’t be complete without the rest of the band of Skrewballs joining them to share Skrewball with the world. So, join us. Grab a glass and release your inner black sheep.

https://www.skrewballwhiskey.com/story/

The Bottle

The white label with a black sheep stands out, it is simple but distinguished. The tag line of “To the misfits, black sheep, and screwballs” sums up the whiskey. This is not your dad’s whisky that he would sip after a long day of work. There is no age statement on the bottle, and it comes in at 70 proof (35% alcohol by volume. The color is deep and rich caramel, and on the nose, it was exactly as you expected smelling of peanut butter.

Tasting the whisky – Straight (Neat)

This whisky is very sweet, I liken it to a sweet southern tea. I was surprised the peanut butter didn’t come out stronger with a short but smooth finish.

Tasting the whisky – With Water

I added a bit more water than I would normally put into a whisky, but in doing so it cut the sweetness and allowed the peanut butter to take hold. This also shortened the finish and allowed more peanut butter on the finish.

Tasting the whisky – With Ice (On the Rocks)

This is my favorite way to drink this whisky without putting it into a cocktail. The ice muted the sweetness even more than with just water and really allowed the taste of peanut butter to become dominant.

Final Thoughts

This is not a whisky that I would drink every day, I enjoy Screwball in a cocktail. Mrs. Dapper Man ordered a chocolate and peanut butter cocktail and the dark chocolate helped balance the sweetness and it tasted like a peanut butter cup. But on it’s own it’s very sweet, and the best way to drink it on it’s own is with ice so that the sweetness is muted and the peanut butter comes to the front.

Thank you for visiting The Dapper Man we hope you have a fantastic day.

Cigar Review – My Father La Opulencia

My Father La Opulencia Banner

In this cigar review I smoke and review the My Father La Opulencia.

About the cigar

Name:  My Father La Opulencia
Wrapper: Oscuro, San Andres
Binder:  Nicaraguan
Filler:  Nicaraguan
Ratings:  Cigar Aficionado 95, Cigar Aficionado #2 Cigar of the Year 2018
Construction: Chunky, feels good in the hand. The wrapper isn’t very oily but is smooth.
Profile: Full
Sizes:
Corona – 5 x 46
Petite – 4 ½ x 48
Robust – 5 ¼ x 52
Toro – 6 x 54
Super Toro – 6 x 60
Toro Gordo – 7 x 56

What does My Father say about the cigar?

Richness and Abundance, just as its name, this is what the new ‘My Father La Opulencia’ is all about. Criollo and Corojo Binders, Corojo, Criollo and Habano Filler all coming from selected farms such as finca El Pedrero, Las Lometas and La Bonita, all property of the Garcia family, finished with a beautiful Mexico Rosado Oscuro wrapper, creating this medium to 3/4 body cigar with the perfect combination of aroma, flavors and complexity. Offered in 6 box-pressed sizes, that are packaged in 20 count boxes, following the traditional My Father line but this time using an art created back in 1897, redesigned to resemble the name of the brand ‘La Opulencia’.
http://myfathercigars.com/

What do I say about the cigar?

Initial Light: Lots of pepper and spice on the first few draws after lighting the cigar. The pepper is followed by sweetness and oak.

First Third:  Predominantly oak and leather, no cocoa, anise, or sweetness. The construction is great, the cigar isn’t canoeing, no runners, no mouse holes, the burn is even, and the cap is intact.

Second Third:   Burn is slightly uneven, but this happens with cigars sometimes. I rolled the cigar over and the burn corrected itself as it should. The cigar construction is holding up, and the burn is good, in spite of the slight unevenness of the burn.

Final Third: The burn corrected itself, and I’m tasting lots of leather, earth, oak, with just a hint of spice and cocoa, but no sweetness.

Final Thoughts:   Take your time with this cigar. Don’t rush through it. I wouldn’t take this cigar on the golf course or have it as a “back yard ‘gar”, it’s to fine of a cigar for running around. I would definitely spend my own money on a box of these cigars.

Construction of the cigar was great through and through. The burn was slightly wonky, but it corrected itself. This cigar also produces lots of billowing smoke and fine ash. The cigar didn’t tar up on me, and the cap stayed intact which is impressive for a box press with a v-cut.

Cigar Review – CAO Flathead 660

In this cigar review I smoke and review the CAO Flathead 660 by CAO and General Cigars.

About the cigar

Name & Size: CAO Flathead 660 (6×60 box press)
Wrapper: Connecticut Broadleaf
Binder: Habano Connecticut
Filler: Nicaraguan Ligero and Piloto, Cubano Ligero
Ratings: 93 and 2015 #3 cigar of the year by Cigar Aficionado
Construction:  The wrapper was flawless. The wrapper smooth, dark and oily. This cigar always feels good in my hand.

What does CAO say about the cigar?

Inspired by hot rods and pin-up girls, CAO Flathead is a box pressed collection that hits on all cylinders. Hand-shaped to deliver a striking flat top, the cigar features a brawny Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper and a blend that’s heavy on Nicaraguan leaf. Its front marks are named for engine parts, but the tribute to muscle cars doesn’t end there. Flathead gives a nod to the muscle car engine, with a lid that’s easily removed and used as wall art. There’s also a collectible, pin-up girl flysheet that’s enclosed in the box.

http://caocigars.com/the-lineup/new-age/flathead/

What do I say about the cigar?

Initial Light / First Third: I was tasting coffee, cocoa, leather and had some sweetness but not a lot. The construction of the cigar was excellent, the burn mostly even.

Second Third: Getting sweetness, earth, leather, and chocolate. Construction is still good. The burn is even, no tunneling, mouse holes, canoeing. The cap is starting to fray just a bit, but it isn’t bad.

Final Third: Deep coffee or espresso flavor, earthiness, leather, not a lot of sweetness at this point. Construction is good, again no tunneling, mouse holes, canoeing, no touchups needed, but the cap is fraying towards the end of the smoke. I used a punch and with the boxpress, this usually happens to me.

Final Thoughts: This cigar is one of my favorite cigars of all time. When I travel, I will take make sure I have a few of these in my travel humidor. I love the box, I love the box press, I love how it tastes. This is not a back yard or golfing cigar. You will want to sit and take your time with this one. But it is well worth it.

I highly suggest you buy a box from your local tobacconist.

Cigar Review – CAO Nicaragua

CAO Nicaragua

In this cigar review I smoke the CAO Nicaragua. This cigar is one of the new cigars from CAO as it was released at IPCPR in 2018. Since it’s release this cigar has become one of my favorite cigars. Read on to learn more about this fantastic cigar.

Name & Size: CAO Nicaragua Tipitapa (4.8 x 50)

Wrapper: Honduran (Jamastran)

Wrapper: Honduran (Jamastran)

Binder: Honduran (Jamastran)

Filler: Nicaraguan (Jalapa, Esteli and Condega)

Flavor Profile: CAO Nicaragua leans more toward pepper than spice and is balanced with medium-full flavors of nuts and toast.

Ratings & Awards: 91 by Cigars Aficionado

http://caocigars.com/the-lineup/world/cao-nicaragua/

Construction

The cigar looks well made. No obvious blemishes on the wrapper. The cigar is smooth and not to hard when pinched. The burn was a bit uneven in the beginning but corrected itself. No tunneling, mouse holes, the cap stayed in tact very well.

Initial Light / First Third

On the first light I received lots of earth, leather, coffee, nuts, and pepper, with spice on the retrohale and dark chocolate on the finish. The only issue with the construction as the burn was a bit uneven, but not what I would call a canoe.

Second Third

Lots of earth, leather, nuts, pepper, with spice in the retrohale. Nice chocolate and butter on the finish.

Final Third:

The cigar has been consistent with the same flavors or earthiness, leather, nuts, and pepper. With spice on the retrohale, and chocolate with a slight butter flavor on the finish.

Final Thoughts

I highly recommend this cigar. It is well priced, with great flavor. This is one of my favorite cigars. This is a great cigar first thing in the morning. I have bought boxes of these and will continue to buy these cigars.

Cigar Review – Balmoral Anejo XO Connecticut

Balmoral Cigars

Balmoral Anejo XO Connecticut Cigar Review

About the cigar

I first head of Balmoral Cigars in late August 2018 at the Rocky Mountain Cigar Festival in Denver, Colorado. I got one of these cigars in my loot bag that I received. After smoking the cigar I thought that I needed to do a review of them.

Direct from the Balmoral Cigars website, these cigars are:

Crowned with a shade-grown wrapper from the Connecticut River Valley, Balmoral Añejo XO Connecticut provides a luxuriously creamy experience that embraces your palate with complex notes of vanilla, toasted caramel and white pepper that finish with a smooth, underlying natural sweetness.

Wrapper: Connecticut Shade
Binder: Ecuador Sumatra
Filler: Dominican Olor, Pennsylvania 41, Brazilian Mata Norte

Profile: Complex notes of vanilla, toasted caramel and white pepper that finish with a smooth, underlying natural sweetness.

https://us.balmoralcigars.com/anejo-xo-connecticut/

Initial Lite and First Third

I used a V cutter to cut my cigar. I use the V cut because it allows for good draw while keeping the cap mostly intact so it doesn’t fall apart on you as you smoke it.

After toasting my cigar I didn’t taste any vanilla. I did get white pepper and caramel. There was also the natural sweetness that Balmoral talks about.

I had no problem keeping the cigar lit, and the construction of the cigar was top notch. The burn was even, there were no runners, tunneling, canoeing or mouse holes.

Second Third

The natural sweetness and the caramel merged together and I was getting a light coffee taste. This offset the white pepper well witch started to slowly go away as I made my way through the second third of the cigar. Strangely a butter flavor emerged.

Construction continued to hold up. I didn’t have to touch up the cigar, and the it was more of the same for the burn, and cap.

Final Third and Final Thoughts

The white pepper was mostly gone by this point. But the butter and coffee flavors stayed until the very end. I did have the slightest unevenness to the burn, but it was so slight I just rotated the cigar and it caught right up. The cap stayed in tact the entire smoke.

So would I buy this cigar again? Yes absolutely. It is a great light smoke. I would smoke one of these on a morning walk, or as the first stick of the day. They are priced well, they were averaging about $10 a stick online (please by from your local tobacconist if you can).

Thank you for visiting The Dapper Man we hope you enjoyed this review and have a fantastic day. You can see more of our cigar reviews here.

Perdomo Craft Series Amber Review

Welcome to another cigar review with The Dapper  Man. Today we smoke a Perdomo Craft Series Amber cigar and pair them with a Guinness Blonde Lager, and a Dragon’s Milk.

The Cigar – Perdomo Craft Series Amber

Filler – Cuban-seed Nicaraguan long-fill
Binder – Nicaraguan
Wrapper – Cuban-seed Nicaraguan Sun Grown wrapper

The Perdomo Craft Series Amber is medium to full-bodied with flavors of leather, spice, and oak that will mingle well with hop forward style beers such as ambers, pale ales, lagers, Oktoberfests, and IPAs. – Cigars International

First Third

Notes of cocoa, some spice (lots of spice on the retrohale), little bit of leather on the exhale.. Very fine white ash. Very good burn.

Middle Third

Notes of sweet cocoa and some coffee on the finish. Had to touch up the burn a little bit, some minor cracking from when we took the wrappers off.

Final Third

Burn corrected itself. Lots of spice on the retrohale, plenty of leather, lots of cocoa and coffee on the finish.

Final Thoughts

Great cigar, burned well. Taste was great, very smooth (unless you retrohale and burn your sinuses). Great price, would recommend for those that like medium to medium full cigars.

The Dapper Man wishes you a fantastic day wherever you are, and make sure you subscribe so you can get weekly updates on Greg’s Year Long Beard Journey.
