Cigar Review – CAO Flathead 660

In this cigar review I smoke and review the CAO Flathead 660 by CAO and General Cigars.

About the cigar

Name & Size: CAO Flathead 660 (6×60 box press)
Wrapper: Connecticut Broadleaf
Binder: Habano Connecticut
Filler: Nicaraguan Ligero and Piloto, Cubano Ligero
Ratings: 93 and 2015 #3 cigar of the year by Cigar Aficionado
Construction:  The wrapper was flawless. The wrapper smooth, dark and oily. This cigar always feels good in my hand.

What does CAO say about the cigar?

Inspired by hot rods and pin-up girls, CAO Flathead is a box pressed collection that hits on all cylinders. Hand-shaped to deliver a striking flat top, the cigar features a brawny Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper and a blend that’s heavy on Nicaraguan leaf. Its front marks are named for engine parts, but the tribute to muscle cars doesn’t end there. Flathead gives a nod to the muscle car engine, with a lid that’s easily removed and used as wall art. There’s also a collectible, pin-up girl flysheet that’s enclosed in the box.

http://caocigars.com/the-lineup/new-age/flathead/

What do I say about the cigar?

Initial Light / First Third: I was tasting coffee, cocoa, leather and had some sweetness but not a lot. The construction of the cigar was excellent, the burn mostly even.

Second Third: Getting sweetness, earth, leather, and chocolate. Construction is still good. The burn is even, no tunneling, mouse holes, canoeing. The cap is starting to fray just a bit, but it isn’t bad.

Final Third: Deep coffee or espresso flavor, earthiness, leather, not a lot of sweetness at this point. Construction is good, again no tunneling, mouse holes, canoeing, no touchups needed, but the cap is fraying towards the end of the smoke. I used a punch and with the boxpress, this usually happens to me.

Final Thoughts: This cigar is one of my favorite cigars of all time. When I travel, I will take make sure I have a few of these in my travel humidor. I love the box, I love the box press, I love how it tastes. This is not a back yard or golfing cigar. You will want to sit and take your time with this one. But it is well worth it.

I highly suggest you buy a box from your local tobacconist.

Cigar Review – My Father The Judge

In this cigar review I smoke and review the My Father the Judge from the Garcia family.

“Cloaked in a gorgeous dark brown Sumatra Oscuro wrapper, who’s subtle sweetness hides an inner strength, this full bodied blend is rounded out by three different Nicaraguan fillers, all grown on the Garcia’s farms as well as Corojo and Criollo binders.” – http://myfathercigars.com/

  • Construction:  The cigar was flawless. The wrapper smooth and it felt good to hold in my hand.
  • Initial Light / First Third: Lots of cedar spice on the initial light with a mocha finish.
  • Second Third: Lots of leather and earth, some nuttiness
  • Final Third: The cedar spice was back, lots of leather and earth wit some nuttiness.

Final Thoughts: I absolutely love this cigar. The smoke so thick you can almost chew it. The earth and leather work well with the cedar spice. If you haven’t had this cigar pick one up from your local tobacconist and try it. If you have tried it I don’t need to tell you how good the cigar actually is.

Mail Call! DRESSFAST by Samuel Hubbard

DRESSFAST by Samuel Hubbard Shoes

Today I open my latest purchase from Samuel Hubbard shoes, their new DRESSFAST shoe.

This shoe is a dressier version of their Fast for Him line. It combines the comfort of their Fast for Him shoes with black leather that you can wear with a suit, or even jeans to dress them up.

The DRESSFAST has a hand-lasted construction for a sock-like fit. Full glove-leather lining for a buttery soft feel and a Vibram sole. Samuel Hubbard also uses a lightweight Kevlar shank provides for arch support, triple density memory foam insole, and silky smooth leather. One of my favorite features is that Samuel Hubbard shoes are easily resoled through their resoling program.

Samuel Hubbard says

This “Dress” addition to our collection of Fast allows you to still move quickly but in fine leather. Hand-lasted construction and softer, more pliable leather, unique to just for this shoe. It’s a shoemaking method that requires the utmost in precision – all the rich, comfy materials that touch your foot are stitched together for a sock-like fit before they’re attached to the sole. We added our dress leather welt to give you a reason to wear Fast to work.

https://www.samuelhubbard.com/dress-fast?color=Brown+Leather

I’m looking forward to trying these shoes out. In my hand they feel nice a light, the inside of the shoe feels soft and butter smooth.

I will come back with a full review of these shoes once I’ve had a chance to wear them and break them in.

Cigar Review – CAO Nicaragua

CAO Nicaragua

In this cigar review I smoke the CAO Nicaragua. This cigar is one of the new cigars from CAO as it was released at IPCPR in 2018. Since it’s release this cigar has become one of my favorite cigars. Read on to learn more about this fantastic cigar.

Name & Size: CAO Nicaragua Tipitapa (4.8 x 50)

Wrapper: Honduran (Jamastran)

Wrapper: Honduran (Jamastran)

Binder: Honduran (Jamastran)

Filler: Nicaraguan (Jalapa, Esteli and Condega)

Flavor Profile: CAO Nicaragua leans more toward pepper than spice and is balanced with medium-full flavors of nuts and toast.

Ratings & Awards: 91 by Cigars Aficionado

http://caocigars.com/the-lineup/world/cao-nicaragua/

Construction

The cigar looks well made. No obvious blemishes on the wrapper. The cigar is smooth and not to hard when pinched. The burn was a bit uneven in the beginning but corrected itself. No tunneling, mouse holes, the cap stayed in tact very well.

Initial Light / First Third

On the first light I received lots of earth, leather, coffee, nuts, and pepper, with spice on the retrohale and dark chocolate on the finish. The only issue with the construction as the burn was a bit uneven, but not what I would call a canoe.

Second Third

Lots of earth, leather, nuts, pepper, with spice in the retrohale. Nice chocolate and butter on the finish.

Final Third:

The cigar has been consistent with the same flavors or earthiness, leather, nuts, and pepper. With spice on the retrohale, and chocolate with a slight butter flavor on the finish.

Final Thoughts

I highly recommend this cigar. It is well priced, with great flavor. This is one of my favorite cigars. This is a great cigar first thing in the morning. I have bought boxes of these and will continue to buy these cigars.

Cigar Review – Balmoral Anejo XO

Today I smoke the Balmoral Anejo XO with a friend from Rems Place.

Wrapper: Sun-Grown Brazilian Arapiraca
Binder: Dominican Olor
Filler: Dominican Olor, Nicaragua (Estelí) and Exclusive, Stalk-Cut Brazilian Mata Norte
Flavor Profile: Complex notes of cedar, cacao and peppery spices that finish with a smooth, underlying natural sweetness.
Ratings: 92 from Cigar Journal, 94 from Cigar and Spirits, 90 from Cigar Authority

Construction : The cigar is well constructed. No obvious blemishes on the wrapper, the cap stayed intact, the cigar didn’t fray at all, there was no tunneling, mouse holes, very little canoeing with an even burn. The cigar wasn’t packed to tight, and felt springy when pinched.

Initial Light / First Third:Before the light there was a lot of fruit and a bit of cocoa taste on the dry draw. At the initial light we received lots of cocoa on the finish, some spice on the retrohale, and cedar in the room note. The smoke become smooth once we got past the initial light with tastes of leather and earth with hints of cocoa.

Second Third: Lots of leather and earthiness, not a lot of sweetness, but that’s due to the fact that we were smoking to fast. Smoked slowly like one should the sweetness came back.

Final Third: Still getting leather, earthiness, and cocoa light a black coffee, with spice on the retrohale. Still getting cedar in the room note. Very smooth by not a lot of cream.

Recommendation: I would buy this cigar again. It is a medium to medium full. This cigar isn’t one that I would smoke when I’m golfing for putting around the back yard. But it isn’t a special day cigar either. It fits in the middle ground of being a good smoke that you want to sit and enjoy.

Final Grade: I give this cigar a good A. It tastes good and burns well.

Cigar Review – Balmoral Anejo XO Oscuro

Balmoral Anejo XO Oscuro Cigar Review

About the cigar
This is the second of three Balmoral cigars I bought online to review. I know I always say to support your local tobacconist, but in my defense he tried to order them but wasn’t able to get any. So I bought a sample pack from Small Batch Cigars.

Direct from the Balmoral Cigars website, these cigars are:
Enrobed in a sun-grown, stalk-cut San Andrés wrapper, Balmoral Añejo XO Oscuro offers a luxuriously rich experience with complex notes of dark chocolate, espresso and black pepper that finish with a smooth, underlying natural sweetness.

Wrapper: Sun-Grown, Stalk-Cut Mexican San Andrés
Binder: Dominican Olor
Filler: Dominican Olor, Nicaragua (Jalapa) and Exclusive, Stalk-Cut Brazilian Mata Norte
Profile: Complex notes of dark chocolate, espresso and black pepper that finish with a smooth, underlying natural sweetness.

Initial Lite and First Third

I decided to go with a V cut for this cigar. If you’ve seen my other cigar reviews you  may have noticed this is my go to cut. It helps keep the cigar cap in tact as I smoke, while allowing for good air flow.

After lighting the cigar I was immediately hit a light floral note that mingled well with the natural sweetness of the earth and leather notes. I got a good amount of pepper on the retro-hale.

Second Third

The earth and leather notes were rich, sweet, and creamy with a taste of flowers and butter on the finish. I still had some pepper on the retro-hale but it was smoothed out by the buttery finish.

The burn had the slightest unevenness but no other problems with the construction of the cigar.

Final Third and Final Thoughts

The burn evened out quickly, and the cap stayed in tact throughout the smoke. There was no tunneling, mouse holes, or canoeing.

The flavors stayed similar throughout the cigar. The pepper mellowed in the middle third but came back towards the end. The sweet floral notes mixed extremely well with the earth and leather notes creating a sweet creamy coffee flavor with a buttery finish.

Over all I give this cigar a A. I would buy a box to smoke. These wouldn’t be an every day smoke, but not a special occasion smoke.

Thank you for visiting The Dapper Man we hope you enjoyed this review and have a fantastic day. You can see more of our cigar reviews here.

Cigar Review – Balmoral Anejo XO Connecticut

Balmoral Cigars

Balmoral Anejo XO Connecticut Cigar Review

About the cigar

I first head of Balmoral Cigars in late August 2018 at the Rocky Mountain Cigar Festival in Denver, Colorado. I got one of these cigars in my loot bag that I received. After smoking the cigar I thought that I needed to do a review of them.

Direct from the Balmoral Cigars website, these cigars are:

Crowned with a shade-grown wrapper from the Connecticut River Valley, Balmoral Añejo XO Connecticut provides a luxuriously creamy experience that embraces your palate with complex notes of vanilla, toasted caramel and white pepper that finish with a smooth, underlying natural sweetness.

Wrapper: Connecticut Shade
Binder: Ecuador Sumatra
Filler: Dominican Olor, Pennsylvania 41, Brazilian Mata Norte

Profile: Complex notes of vanilla, toasted caramel and white pepper that finish with a smooth, underlying natural sweetness.

https://us.balmoralcigars.com/anejo-xo-connecticut/

Initial Lite and First Third

I used a V cutter to cut my cigar. I use the V cut because it allows for good draw while keeping the cap mostly intact so it doesn’t fall apart on you as you smoke it.

After toasting my cigar I didn’t taste any vanilla. I did get white pepper and caramel. There was also the natural sweetness that Balmoral talks about.

I had no problem keeping the cigar lit, and the construction of the cigar was top notch. The burn was even, there were no runners, tunneling, canoeing or mouse holes.

Second Third

The natural sweetness and the caramel merged together and I was getting a light coffee taste. This offset the white pepper well witch started to slowly go away as I made my way through the second third of the cigar. Strangely a butter flavor emerged.

Construction continued to hold up. I didn’t have to touch up the cigar, and the it was more of the same for the burn, and cap.

Final Third and Final Thoughts

The white pepper was mostly gone by this point. But the butter and coffee flavors stayed until the very end. I did have the slightest unevenness to the burn, but it was so slight I just rotated the cigar and it caught right up. The cap stayed in tact the entire smoke.

So would I buy this cigar again? Yes absolutely. It is a great light smoke. I would smoke one of these on a morning walk, or as the first stick of the day. They are priced well, they were averaging about $10 a stick online (please by from your local tobacconist if you can).

Thank you for visiting The Dapper Man we hope you enjoyed this review and have a fantastic day. You can see more of our cigar reviews here.

My Father Flor de la Antillas Cigar Review

My Father Flor de la Antillas Cigar Review

Greg and Victor from Rems Smoke Shop in Grand Junction smoke the My Father Flor de la Antillas cigar.

About the cigar

Spanish for Flower of the Antilles this cigar won Cigar of the year in 2012 with a rating of 96 from Cigar Aficionado. This cigar won seven other 90+ ratings that year. The Garcia family normally makes stronger cigars, this was their first attempt at a medium bodied cigar.

Featuring an all-Nicaraguan blend of tobaccos, Flor de las Antillas maintains My Father’s reputation for crafting full-flavored, well constructed handmades. Greeting you from the outside is a dark brown Nicaraguan Sun Grown wrapper beautifully box-pressed and smooth to the touch. This leaf houses a bouquet of Nicaraguan long-fillers and binder, to create an exceptionally balanced and smooth experience. Each Flor de las Antillas delivers a distinct array of flavors, including notes of cocoa, pepper, sweet cedar, and earth. From start to finish, Flor de las Antillas maintains its smooth character and never goes a tick over medium to full-bodied. An anytime of day My Father experience. – Cigars International

Size: Robusto
Shape: Box Pressed
Wrapper: Nicaraguan
Binder: Nicaraguan
Filler: Nicaraguan long leaf
Price: $8-$9 in Colorado

Initial Lite and First Third

The first puffs on the cigar provided strong notes of pepper. Once smoked an inch we had notests of cedar, cocoa and coffee on the finish with pepper in the retrohale.

Second Third

Still getting sweet notes of cedar, and cocoa with pepper prevalent on the retrohale.

Final Third and Final Thoughts

The cigar is a medium cigar, great for mornings with a cup of coffee. The cigar burns well, tastes great with earth, sweet cedar, cocoa, and some pepper. We highly recommend this cigar.
